As born and bred Kiwi drivers, we've spent years navigating New Zealand’s diverse terrain, from the bustling streets of Auckland to the remote, scenic routes of the South Island. We understand what makes a trip truly memorable, and it often comes down to the details: the flexibility to linger at a breathtaking viewpoint, the convenience of door-to-door service, and the peace of mind that comes with a professional, experienced driver at the wheel.

Can you hire a private driver in New Zealand?

We offer comprehensive private driver services throughout New Zealand, catering to a wide range of needs, from luxury transfers to multi-day private tours. Our goal is to make your travel around New Zealand as seamless and enjoyable as possible.

Why Choose a Private Driver for Your New Zealand Adventure?

Choosing a private driver goes beyond simple transportation; it's about enhancing your entire travel experience. Here’s why we believe it’s the best way to see New Zealand:

  • Unmatched Flexibility: Your itinerary is yours to command. Want to spend an extra hour at a scenic overlook in the Tasman region? No problem. Need to adjust your schedule last minute? We can accommodate.
  • Local Knowledge: Our drivers are true Kiwis with extensive local knowledge. We can share insights into Māori culture, recommend the best spots for a flat white (coffee), or point out hidden gems that guidebooks often miss. This local perspective transforms a simple drive into an enriching cultural exchange.
  • Comfort and Style: We pride ourselves on our fleet of high-end, quality vehicles, including Mercedes models, ensuring you travel in comfort and style. Whether it's a Mercedes Sprinter for a small group or a luxury sedan for a couple, your journey will be relaxing.
  • Stress-Free Travel: Forget about rental car insurance, driving on the left, or finding parking. With a private driver, you can relax and enjoy the scenery, leaving all the logistical worries to us. This is particularly valuable for those long, scenic drives between places like Christchurch and Queenstown, or Rotorua and Auckland.
  • Personalised Service: Every private tour or transfer is tailored to your schedule and preferences. We work with you to personalise your itinerary, ensuring every aspect of your journey meets your expectations.

What do they call a private driver in New Zealand?

In New Zealand, a private driver is often referred to as a "chauffeur." While "private driver" is perfectly understood and widely used, the term "chauffeur" typically implies a higher level of professional service, luxury vehicles, and a more formal, dedicated transport experience. We offer both private driver and chauffeur services , ensuring we meet your specific requirements for luxury travel.

How does Kiwi Driver work?

At Kiwi Driver, we've streamlined our process to ensure a seamless experience for our clients. It starts with your vision for your New Zealand trip. You tell us where you want to go, what you want to see, and any specific requirements you have. From there, we:

  1. Consult and Plan: We'll discuss your ideal itinerary, whether it's a multi-day private tour covering the South Island's best scenic nature spots, or just an airport transfer. We can offer suggestions based on our experience, ensuring you see the best places, from Mt Cook to the Bay of Islands.
  2. Customise Your Journey: We personalise your travel plan, suggesting routes that maximise scenic views and minimise travel time. We can incorporate specific attractions like Abel Tasman National Park or Lake Tekapo.
  3. Provide Professional Drivers: On the day, one of our experienced drivers will meet you, ready to provide exceptional service. Our drivers are not just skilled behind the wheel; they are also fantastic hosts, eager to share their passion for New Zealand.
  4. Execute with Excellence: We handle all the driving, navigation, and logistics, allowing you to relax and enjoy the scenery. From luxury transfers to day tours, we ensure every moment is comfortable and stress-free.

Can you give me an approximate cost for a half day?

While we don't list specific pricing due to the bespoke nature of our services, the cost for a half-day private driver hire in New Zealand can vary significantly. Factors influencing the price include the type of vehicle (e.g., standard sedan, luxury SUV, Mercedes Sprinter), the distance covered, and any specific requests for the driver's time or additional services. We encourage you to contact us directly for a personalised quote tailored to your exact half day or full day tour needs. We are committed to providing transparent pricing for our quality vehicles and professional drivers.

What can I use instead of Uber in New Zealand for private transport?

For those seeking alternatives to ride-sharing services like Uber, especially for longer distances, luxury transfers, or a more dedicated service, our private driver and chauffeur services are an excellent option. While Uber is great for short, impromptu rides, it doesn't offer the same level of personalised service, vehicle choice, or the in-depth local knowledge that comes with a dedicated private driver hire. We provide a premium solution for airport transfers, private tours, and any travel where comfort, reliability, and local expertise are paramount.

We've seen many travellers initially consider self-driving or public transport, only to find themselves wishing for the ease and flexibility that a private driver offers. Especially when exploring the vast and varied landscapes of New Zealand, from the Abel Tasman region to Queenstown, having a professional at the helm allows you to truly unwind and absorb the beauty around you.

Waiheke Wanderings: Wine, Waves, and a Little Bit of Magic

Kia ora, fellow travellers! Today, I finally ticked off something that’s been sitting at the very top of my bucket list for years: I walked through Hobbiton. Yes, the real Hobbiton — the one nestled among the rolling hills of Matamata, New Zealand, where hobbits live in round-doored homes and second breakfasts are a way of life. From the moment I stepped onto the lush farmland, I felt like I’d been plucked straight from reality and dropped into a Tolkien novel. The air smelled fresh, the grass was impossibly green, and I could almost hear the faint strumming of a lute in the distance. If you’ve ever dreamt of wandering through the Shire, I can promise you — it’s even better in person. The tour began at The Shire’s Rest, where I hopped on a bus that meandered down a country lane, offering sneak peeks of what was to come. Our guide was brilliant — equal parts funny and knowledgeable, with just enough nerdy energy to make the experience feel like a storytelling session. And then — we were there. The Green Dragon Inn peeked out in the distance, but my eyes were locked on Bag End. Yes, Bag End . Frodo and Bilbo's home, perched up on a hill, looking exactly like it did on screen. I stood in front of that iconic green door and half expected Gandalf to show up muttering, “No admittance except on party business.” Each hobbit hole had its own personality — some had tiny wheelbarrows full of vegetables, others had colourful laundry fluttering on clotheslines. The attention to detail is insane. Even the gardens are lovingly maintained, with real herbs and flowers blooming just like a hobbit might tend them. The pinnacle of the tour? A complimentary ale, cider, or ginger beer at the Green Dragon Inn. Sitting by the fire with a drink in hand, I could totally picture Merry and Pippin singing songs and causing harmless mischief in the corner. The place feels alive. It’s not just a movie set — it’s a celebration of storytelling, craftsmanship, and imagination. If you're heading to New Zealand and you're even mildly a fan of The Lord of the Rings or The Hobbit, do yourself a favour: visit Hobbiton. Whether you’re there for the film magic, the landscape, or just the joy of pretending to be a hobbit for a few hours, it’s pure Middle-earth magic. Next time, I’m bringing a cloak and hairy feet. Until then — may the road rise up to meet you, and may your ale always be cold. Cheers from the Shire, John (a very tall hobbit at heart)
